The Forreston Wild Creek

A run on the original Wild Creek RR - Forreston SA

Departing from Sacramento on the upper level in the staging area.

At Sacramento station we wait for our train, which will be a Western Pacific RDC2. It arrives and we climb the steps and settle into our seats for the trip to Salt Lake city via Wild Creek.

Conductor gives the signal and the  RDC ‘s horn blows, and it is a smooth departure as we go thru the yard out on to the main. Time passes and after a while we find our selves in a tunnel, then daylight as we exit onto a high shelf with a view out of the right hand down on a town many feet below us. We cross over a valley on a long open deck bridge before heading into another tunnel and on exiting we slow down as go through a couple of sets of turnouts into Forter. On the Left is the Orr Lumber Company and Orr Building Supplies. On the right is a Bed Manufacture and Grain and Seed Supplier, before stopping at the depot.

After departing we see a track behind the depot heading off to a coal mine. Once out of the yard we plunge into another tunnel. Shortly after we are back in daylight as we seem to be going down hill. We again hear the noise of a turnout and a passing track on our left appears, then two extra tracks into the Weedon Coal Mine. The loop then joins the main as we still seem to be going down hill, then over a creek on a stone bridge, and again we are thrown into darkness.

On exiting of the tunnel we see another track on our left which is the SP main to Roseville. The RDC crosses from the Wild Creek main onto the SP main as we arrive in Wild Creek yard with warehouses and Adler Electronic Corp on the left and then we slow down and stop at the  depot. Out of the right hand side we can see several yard tracks and the mainline. The horn sounds are as we go over several turnouts we can see the loco fuel and caboose tracks on our left. As the RDC picks up speed and what sounds to be the last turnout the RDC starts to hum along. Into another tunnel.

Back in daylight the RDC slows and looking out the left hand window we can see the curved Wild Creek timber trestle, and another track joining back into the main. On the trestle we look down on the creek many feet below, at a guess could 100 feet to the creek. Over the trestle, we go into a cutting before hearing the clickety click of another two pair of turnouts, passing Johnson’s Concrete Pipes we slow for the depot at Blackspring. Horn sounds and we are soon on our way again, and re-enter the main line, then on the left is Connery’s Cannery with a few cars being loaded. Again into darkness, this time it is a long tunnel.

Back into daylight we exit the tunnel in a steep sided cutting then on our right a string of cars loaded with rock. Again the clackity of turnouts we enter the depot line, with the main and a loop line on our left and slow to stop at Navaro depot. Behind the depot we can see a couple track under a steel bridge going into a valley, with plenty of cars in that area. Horn sounds and we are on our way again. As we enter the main there is a couple of warehouses and a Soda Pop manufacturer. Darkness falls on us again as we enter another tunnel, and after a while we enter the Salt Lake City yard and cross over into the depot line and come to a stop.

It has been a long journey and the 1 1/4 hour [6:1] journey from just before Forter to Navaro was very interesting.

Trust you enjoyed the trip,

We're Moving

In 2014 Ray informed us all “We’re moving!” So the layout that had provides so many years of fun and fellowship was closed and dismantled and the new Wild Creek built at Blakeview.
